World Food Championships 2014 – Las Vegas, Nevada
In October of 2014, a friend called me to tell me of a local cooking competition being held in Scottsdale, Arizona. “You’ve won some of our neighborhood “throw-downs”, you make great food, you should compete”. I thought about it like 10 seconds, and said “sure I’ll do it”. My husband Ken and I talked about menus, ran a few practice runs and prepared for a fun Saturday afternoon cooking outside at Westworld for the “Scottsdale Sizzlin Showdown”. Well, as it turns out, I was overwhelmed with excitement by earning a Golden Ticket to the 2014 World Food Championships in Las Vegas! My Spicy Shrimp and Grits had the 3rd highest score in the entire Showdown. Off to Las Vegas we went to cook on Fremont Street! It was an amazing experience, we did well enough in the seafood category for 22nd place out of 50-plus competitors, a field composed mostly of professional chefs, culinary students, and a few accomplished home cooks. It was my first real exposure to food sport, and I was hooked!
