Arizona Republic AZ Top Home Chef 2016
One day in the summer of 2016 I noticed an ad on Facebook for a competition called Arizona’s Top Home Chef. I was instantly intrigued and on top of it! I wanted to come up with a menu that screamed Summer in Arizona on a plate, as well as my signature “Southern Dish with a Southwest Twist”. The menu I came up with was Smoked Barbecue Ribs with Smoked Hatch Green Chile Grilled Corn and a dessert of Grilled Angel Food cake with a Strawberry Compote. The judges were impressed! I was chosen as a top 3 finalist which came with an invitation to host the Arizona Republic food and wine staff at my home! The entourage included the Food Editor and her staff, as well as renowned food critic (and all-around nice guy!) Dominic Armato. Nervous, excited, and ready to throw down some good eats, we started with some bubbly, then on to serving up my 3 courses of culinary delights, of course with wine pairings to match. Well, the panel was impressed, I was chosen as the winner…..however…..it was a tie!!! Unprecedented in this competition, a cook-off was to occur at the AZ Republic’s headquarters in Downtown Phoenix. I made one of my favorites, smoked jerk fish tacos with a habanero mango salsa. They loved the dish, however I was overcome by my competitor who brought unusual flavors to their palette. It was an amazing experience and something I’m very proud of. You can read about it here:
